Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
